How do I efficiently export my FCP HD file into a Quicktime 7 file for the web?

I need to convert a 900mb Final Cut Pro HD file to a Quicktime file of less than 400mb. The file needs to be uploaded to the web and enabled for download. What is the most efficient way of doing this? I've tried everything from exporting using Quicktime conversion and exporting using Compressor, but the files are always either A) too big or B) 4:3 - which looks like shite coming from 16:9 HD. Any helpful offerings? Thanks so much....

You don't specify what codec you want to deliver in, but I'm going to assume it's H264, which would be the best codec for web delivery of HD clips.

You also don't mention which version of Final Cut/Compressor you're using, but if you have Compressor 3.x, just apply one of the H.264 presets to it, then adjust the Video Data Rate of that setting (Click on the "Settings" button in the Encoder tab) so that you end up with a file that doesn't exceed your maximum desired filesize. You'll need to do a little math to figure out what your "Restrict to:" bitrate should be in order to to achieve that filesize.

Compressor should not mess with your aspect ratio, unless you're using an incorrect codec which requires specific frame aspect ratios. I've never had a problem with the H264 presets messing up my HD encodes into 4:3.

You'll end up with a 940x540 file...h.264 (or wmv if you have the tools), with a very low data rate. I'd probably cut the frame rate in 1/2 as well. A couple of tests through compressor should take care of it.
