What do I need to know about search engine optimization?

Search engine optimization... I'm happy to buy a book, but are they worth it? Do I really need to know more than the basic best-practices for Google?
By best practices for Google, I mean relevant page titles, semantic markup, etc.
Does the keywords metatag carry weight any longer?

This book is good. Many useful tips for improving your search results. But, just as importantly, how to not get blacklisted by google. Also, some cool tips on obscure google usage.
