What is a compass rose, alex?

You know that graphic element used on maps to show North, South, East and West - doe that have a name? (I can't think of it for the life of me...

Compass rose. And because of my complusive need top share my methodology, OneLook has a decidedly handy reverse dictionary feature.

The fancier ones are called Compass Roses. The National Park Service calls those little ones that say "this way is north" North Arrows

I used to work with a draftsman that enjoyed incorporating subversive elements (think Disney animators) into his compass roses. Ever since then, I always take a little extra time to study them.
