Bare Fiber (Optic)?

Bare fiber-optic cable for home lighting projects?

I want a decent quantity of 'bare fiber' to play around with for some lighting projects at home ('hybrid solar lighting' images; video). I found this on eBay, but I don't really want 50,000 meters. I would like to spend around $50 or less and get probably a few hundred yards. Given the number of cheap doo-dads using tons of this I'm sure it's quite inexpensive in bulk but I can't seem to track down a source. Where can I find this stuff, and what is it called? "Bare fiber" doesn't yield a lot of hits. Also the stuff in the video looks thicker than that big spool on eBay.

Since I'm not using it for signal transmission I don't care what type it is (although perhaps some types are better suited for transmitting sunlight than others?).

Thanks!

I don't know if you have an American Science & Surplus store around you but you can always order their things online.

Are you sure you don't want 50km of strand? A useful bundle might have a thousand strands or more...

Interesting technology, but man that website that merocet provided must set some sort of world record for garishness.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone. So far merocet's garish link is the winner.

As to the 50km spool...that is way more than i'd use in my lifetime, the expense is far beyond what I want to spend, and the diameter of the cable is quite small.

That American Science & Surplus site is cool - I'm sure I'll use them in the future, so thanks!

If you want a smaller amount to play round with, model railway folk sometimes use this in their layouts. There is an auction on ebay now for 500ft for about $20.
I suspect the seller would be able to supply in other lengths, as they appear to have regular auctions.
