Cheap jeweler in Manhattan?

I need to find a jeweler in Manhattan (preferably the Village) that can resize a ring for me, for a decent price.

I have a ring of my mother's that is worth a decent amount of money (not a diamond ring however) and I need to bring it down about 3 sizes. I really don't want to pay that much though. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Are jewelers out of control in Manhattan? I only paid $28 to have my fiancee's platinum engagement ring resized in the wealthiest part of the Detroit Metro area.

Response by poster: Well I'm also looking for somewhere reputable, I don't really feel comfortable just walking into any place off the street as many of the jewelers I see around look pretty dodgy.

You might be surprised--usually the dodgy ones have the most talented jewelers. And most of the chain stores who people assume have talented people actually outsource the work to the dodgy looking places (or independents).

That said, I have had jewelry work done of this magnitude at three different places and was never disappointed in the results. I wouldn't sweat it, but I will defer to those in Manhattan for specifics. :)

I use Kramer Bros, on 47th St, naturally. 212 869 5000

Most of the places in the Diamond District are pretty reasonable and just fine for resizing. The last two times I've needed something, I've gone to Klim Jewelers on West 47th Street. 212-869-3950

Be aware the price to have a ring resized can vary wildly, depending on whether it's up or down, and how many sizes. Down is fairly inexpensive; up usually depends on the difference.

Try Little King on E 9th, around 2nd Ave. Decent prices and the staff is awesome. I think others on Mefi have recommended them as well.

Try Fortunoff on Fifth Ave, and Murrey's on the upper east side. If Murrey's is still there.
