How can I use HDMI with an old AV receiver?

The receiver in question is a modest Denon 1804. It has no HDMI port. I realise getting the new HD audio formats to work isn't going to happen. With the image, though, could I at least get a true HD (1920 x 1080p) digital signal to pass through somehow?

If there's not an HDMI port, you can't use HDMI. As for just HD video, from looking at the manual online quickly it looks like the unit does have component video connections, but I'm fairly sure those aren't going to be true HD component pass-through connections, and it's not going to be a digital signal no matter what.

No. Much in the same way you can't use it as a pass-through for a USB keyboard or as a router for your Internet connection.

If you have a decent HD TV you can run your HDMI sources to your TV and run the audio out from the TV to your receiver, and switch the inputs with your TV. Not as elegant, but cheaper than a new receiver.
