Can't get flashget to download .rm

Why won't flashget download this .rm file?

I would like to download .rm files so that I can convert them to mp3 and listen to them later. However, I can't get it to work. I started with a .ram file, which contained a reference to a .smil file. I got the .smil file, then dug out the reference to a .rm file:

rtsp://go.rbn.com/livecon/kcrw/g2demand/mb/MBE1.rm

When I paste this into Firefox, it plays fine with RealPlayer. However when I try to download it with flashget, I just times out and nothing happens.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong? Thanks.

Well, that's a streaming file you're trying to download. You'll need something like VLC to convert the stream into something static.

rtsp is a media streaming protocol, likely flashget can't respond appropriately to the media server. Some rm servers will allow a fallback to http though, did you try replacing the rtsp with an http?

Ignore the first two comments, flashget is perfecly capable of doing this (normally).

What I'm not clear on though, is why you don't just feed flashget the first .ram link? On the BBC radio site when I want to download a realaudio show for conversion to MP3 I just give flashget the link right from the webpage, and it flips though to the actual file all by itself. Those "play in stand alone realplayer" links are .ram and it works for me.

You're right in saying that the rtsp link you provided doesn't work though, or at least I can't get it to work either.

Perhaps someone more technical than I can decode the flashget log for this attempted download...

That's a link to the live kcrw simulcast. I suspect that the problem is related to the fact that it is not really a static file on their end. If that is really what you want to capture I recommend StreamRipper for this purpose. You can schedule it to capture whatever you want on a regular basis. However, KCRW offers most of its shows via podcast which would be the easiest solution.

Manjusri: Streamripper doesn't handle Real streams, only mp3/ogg/aac.

tabulem: Can't help you with the Flashget problem but if you do some googling you may be able to find a copy of Streambox VCR. It is very effective at capturing Real streams -- in fact so effective that Real sued them under the DMCA and won (well, settled out of court, but the net effect is that the software never came out of beta.) Of course, if you are a USian please note that I am not advocating that you break the law by downloading, using, or even thinking about Streambox VCR.

I should have mentioned that KCRW also simulcasts in mp3. I used to use mplayer+lame to rip streams to mp3 but found streamripper on the mp3 stream resulted in a higher quality end result.

I still use mplayer+lame (with a homebrew vb front end) to capture specific stories from the All Things Considered rss feed.

I just successfully downloaded the file by pasting the link into Net Transport, which you can get here. There's a free version of the software that will do the trick for you.
