Where can I buy dry ice in Chicago?

I need to buy a few pounds of dry ice in Chicago, preferably on the north side. I've tried ice cream shops and some restaurant supply stores, but - if they even have it - only sell it in huge quantities. Any thoughts?

Try googling (or yellow paging) industrial gases or welding supply.

No no no... you're both thinking about this the wrong way. I wish I had an answer specific to Chicago, but everywhere I've lived, you can find dry ice in at least half of all grocery stores. Just call in advance or head to your favorites ones.

When you say you tried ice cream shops, did that mean Oberweis? I have always been able to buy dry ice at Oberweis.

Also, you might be able to get some at Rainbow Cone at Millennium Park. I got some Rainbow ice cream for my mom's birthday and they provided me with dry ice to make sure the ice cream wouldn't melt on my drive out to the 'burbs.

I know most grocery stores in my area carry dry ice. Call a Publix and see if they sell it.

This is not Chicago-specific, but it used to available at some gas stations. Maybe this is no longer the case, though. It's been awhile since I was looking for some.

I've bought dry ice from soft-drink distributors before.

Best answer: Jefferson Ice (Home City Ice) sells 10 lb minimum for $1 / pound. Location on the North Side. Open 8-4 weekdays, slightly less on Saturdays

Hi honey. Next time you can just call me at work and I'll find it for you :)
