File Dependency System

Are there file dependency management systems out there?
I'm not even sure what this is called. But we have a bunch of assets at our company that are spread over many files, with some assets sharing files. If we want to remove an asset, we have to search all the other assets for dependencies before deleting it.
I'm sure a product like this exists, I don't know what search string to look for, or what concept is out there.
