Graphics that pop.

I program actionscript on the side and I'm looking to pick up a designer's slack on a particular project. Can anyone recommend some really great internet resources (tutorial write-ups, guidelines, video) for learning how to create "Web 2.0" style graphics?
I'm thinking gradients, high glossy type-stuff. You can probably tell I've totally missed the boat on this one.
