how do i find out historical weather for a location in the US?

I want to reserve a campground and want to checkout how the weather was in a particular date in past years.

Agree with Weather Underground. If you want to go back before 1996 try either NCDC or WeatherGraphics (both cost money).

(P.S. Aren't you just looking for climatological information for a particular time of the calendar year, rather than weather on a specific date in history? In that case Weather Underground should suffice for poking around at 1996 to 2006).

I use Weather Underground for this.
