Who will assess me?

Looking to take some AS-levels as an external candidate in the UK. Help!

At the moment I'm studying independently, not affiliated with any course or college, but I can't seem to find anywhere that will let me take exams as an external candidate. I want to take AS-levels in maths and french at the end of the year, it's not that I'm opposed to evening courses, they're just aren't any in my area!
I've rung my LEA, the exam board and a couple of local colleges, none of which have been able to help me. Edexcel recommended Pearson Vue, but they seem more like an organisation specialising in professional qualifications. Perhaps an intensive revision course would offer the exam at the end of it?

Any Mefites faced this dilemma themselves?

I can't speak from experience but like you I am also considering doing some A Levels by distance learning. A google search for this shows a few outfits that may be able to provide this. If you have not done so already I would consider dropping them an email asking about whether they can do AS-levels - or tell you if anybody else could. NEC and ICS are at the top of my shortlist. Good luck!

Long shot: Ask a local school? If they can't help (my guess is they won't) they might be able to point you in the right direction. A local sixth form / FE college might be more flexible than an ordinary secondary school.
