IndiaFilter: anybody have any specific tips on places to visit / avoid in Tamil Nadu?
I will be in Tamil Nadu for about two weeks, landing in Chennai, before hopping onto a train to the North. In the past, the only part of the state that I have touched has been Kodaikanal. I have a rough idea of where I plan to go, but am interested in others' opinions.
(yes, I know about Thorn Tree etc - interested in hearing from MeFites specifically)

If you have the time and you are pretty travel savvy, goto Kanyakumari and watch the sunrise. One of the most amazing experiences of my life.

There are several national parks worth visiting (if being outdoors is your thing). I highly recommend Top Slip

I was in Mahabalipuram in July (very off season, so it might be another kind of beast altogether this time of year), and really liked it. Very laidback/beachy setting, but also some cool temples and rock carvings. And amazing seafood.
Pondicherry is fun as well, but never really got under my skin to the same extent. We spent some time in Tranquebar / Tharangambadi, which is definitely off the beaten track, as is Karaikal where transportation necessities led us to spend a day (not particularly commendable).
