Pizza from heaven? Why is there food outside my back door?

Every once-in-a-while, when I go to let my dog out first thing in the morning, or after getting home from work, there is a small corner piece of pizza or heel of bread sitting outside my back door. Who loves my dog so much that they want to leave her treats?

more info: I live in "the city" and i let the dog out from the basement door. the door is underneath an addition, and there is a ledge of concrete about 36" tall enclosing the stairs. the food is always on that ledge, shoved in the corner, and the dog seems to know that it will be there when I let her out as she goes around the door and jumps up right away. It seems too strategically placed for it to have been a bird or a squirrel saving it for later.

i have 1 theory, and that is that someone is leaving it there to see if we have a dog so they can decide whether to break in later or not? like if the food's gone, then there's probably a dog and it's probably not a good idea. my google-fu fails to turn up any mentions of this possibility though.

anyone else have this experience?

Birds and squirrels would not leave the bread for later.

Ask your neighbors if they're leaving treats for your dog. If so, mystery solved. You can ask them to stop or not. If not, please do not let your dog eat random food left out. Honestly, you don't know if the food has been poisoned or not.

Leave a note (perhaps one mentioning the presence of a strategically hidden security camera) in the place where the food is. The note may end up in a nest somewhere, but at least you can see if the food stops coming.

Hidden camera time.

Could be rats. They like to cache food in odd places. You could try sprinking ashes or flour around the site, to see if anything is going to leave footprints/drag marks.

Ditto the worry about poison - someone might hate your dog, not love it.
