annoying PS2 slimline noise

Our PS2 died, so we bought a new Slimline PS2. The noise it makes is driving me insane. Or am I already crazy?
My husband says he doesn't hear what I'm hearing. The noise, which I believe is the disk being read, sounds to me like a moderately high-pitched beeping/screeching of various lengths. It sounds a bit like a fork scraping a plate, and it kills my ears and brain. If he's playing late at night in the living room, I can hear it from the bedroom.
He thinks I'm a little crazy that it bothers me so much. Has anyone else noticed this? I can't find anything online except that the slim version is supposed to be QUIETER than the original.

I can hear the disc spinning in my slimline, but not a beep or screech. There may be something wrong with the power supply or drive. He most likely doesn't hear it because his hearing doesn't extend as high as yours. Are you irritated by CRT tvs as well?

peep, you're probably not crazy. I bet you're more sensitive to high-pitched sounds than your husband is. There are some consumer electronics that really annoy me with that whine you describe - I usually learn to accept it. You can try taking it back and exchanging it, if you get a sypathetic sales clerk.

If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds exactly like the sound that my PS2 'fat' version makes. When it first spins up the disc it makes a very pronounced be-be-beep! noise. I've always assumed that it's probably the pickup laser adjusting.

No, but if I turn my head a certain way, I can hear my computer monitor buzzing. It's not annoying, though.
And owenkun, I do think it is the same noise, but the slimline makes the noise throughout play, not just as the disk initially loads. I'm not sure if that's what you were saying.

I've not had this with a PS2, but I did have a router with a power supply that made a high-pitched whine that I had to really listen to be able to hear, but that drove my girlfriend insane. Maybe it's the (external) power supply and you could swap that out?

Response by poster: I figured out that the noise only happens when my husband plays Tiger Woods 06. Must be something with that game.

That said, that doesn't mean there isn't something wrong with yours though. Next time you have someone over you can ask them to be a guinea pig...
