Identify this chant or mantra.

What are these people singing? It sounds like padana-whey, padana-whey, padana, chanted over and over.

One of them plays a hollow wooden block and one has a tamborine-like instrument. The rhythm is knock, rest, knock, rest, knock, knock, knock. They're always out in the park, and I thought it was just a drum circle, but it's always this simple mantra chanted over and over with no variation. I think once they had a girl with them who stood and played a drum, but there wasn't really any dancing. They're not dressed unusually, but the two guys today both had shaved heads, to about an inch or so. They don't look like hari-krishnas. I'd like to know some background on the song and the people who sing it.

Best answer: If there wasn't any body movements that looked like a combination of a martial art and dancing, it might not be capoeira. Could it be a group of musicians practicing capoeira songs?

"Padana-whey" sounds to me a lot like a common capoeira call-and-response refrain. Check this link out:

Paraná is the name of a southern Brazilian state, near Paraguay, as well as the name of a large river in that region.

Response by poster: These guys were sitting on a park bench, however, that's exactly the song. I guess they were just skipping the chorus. Thanks!
