What to do in Spokane this week-end....

What is there to do with a 17-year-old son when visiting Spokane, Washington this week-end (Friday, 10/20 through Sunday morning 10/22)? We'll have a car. Thanks
I think you ought to go wander around the Bowl & Pitcher or the Indian Painted Rocks. Not so much hiking as wandering.

Former Spokanite here. Spokane is a great small city, but there's not a ton for the average out-of-town 17 year old to do. The Riverpark Square mall (downtown) is pretty nice and "upscale" (more Nordstrom than Hot Topic, for better or worse), and the food court is home to Twigs, a bistro-y restaurant that is much nicer and better tasting than its mall surroundings suggest. I would also suggest Mizuna for great vegetarian and veg-heavy (they're doing fish and maybe even a little meat now) food.
Maybe I'll think of more later. Feel free to email me if you have any questions, though (rossination at gmail.com).

Is he bookish? There's a magnificent bookstore called Auntie's right downtown. Floor after floor of wonderful books, with used and rare titles on the top floor. When I lived in the Lilac City, I lost many an afternoon and evening to wandering round this store.
Sadly, rossination is a bit on the money when it comes to the city lacking much of interest to the average modern 17-year-old. A walk round Riverwalk Park should certainly be on your schedule, but that only knocks out a long afternoon. There's a couple concerts on during the weekend in question - don't know if these acts appeal to you guys or not.
Now, if the lad's into nature, then you're in luck. The Spokane area is one of the greenest, most lovely areas in Eastern Washington. And it only gets better as you head north. You can reach Chewelah in just over an hour and spend the rest of the day marveling at the chlorophyl.
Hope this helps. Have fun in Spokane!

Spokane is a great small city. Be sure to walk around Riverfront Park, and ride the gondolas over the waterfall. There is also an Imax movie theater in the park. There are some great hiking and biking trails in and around Spokane if he likes that sort of thing.
