Apple ate my DVD player

Did an update to my iMac last night without thinking and now Apple's DVD player won't recognize my external DVD drive.
So, my ex-boyfriend set me up with an external DVD player so I could watch movies on my ancient iMac. He also found a patch to get Apple's DVD player to recognize that drive. Well, the people who made the patch are no longer updating it and I stupidly ran an update to my operating system last night and now the DVD player errors, says it can't find a valid drive. I tried throwing away the DVD player and installing an older version but it won't install, saying that a newer version is already there. Obviously, I haven't REALLY uninstalled it. Can anybody give me some tips or am I truly screwed?

Response by poster: Yo, no dice. The DVD player still won't recognize my external drive.

Response by poster: Heehaw. A call to my Apple-lovin' ex guided me to a framework folder that needed to be thrown out and replaced by an older, patched version. Everything works now. I can watch my porn again!
