How can I add words to my text-message dictionary on a Samsung SGH-T309 cell phone?

I have a Motorola rzr v3 and I know that my T9 will eventually start recognizing words if I type them enough, "selecting" each letter as I go. This has proved extremely helpful with curse words and nicknames. I believe there is a learning-curve for the T9 function, which is what I assume you're talking about.

Response by poster: I've had my phone for at least a year, and the T9 thing never "learns". On my old phone, when the phone didn't recognize a word, it would "guess". Then, if it couldn't come up with anything, it would have a "spell" option, where I could enter the word into the dictionary myself. As far as I can tell, my current phone doesn't have anything like this. Is that correct, or is there some way to manually add words to my dictionary?

I have a Samsung SPH-A740, and I text message as much as a junior high girl, but I've never found out how to add words to the dictionary.

(But what I'd really like to do is be able to change the word defaults. That is, so that 46 defaults to 'go' instead of 'in', etc. I know that T9 uses the most popular word of the two, but Tegic Communications should think about what we're actually using our phones for; the text message "Call me if you need a ride home" should not come out "call of he you need a side good.")

But what if you need a side good?

This is from the user's guide at:
http://www.samsungtelecom.com/pdf/t309.pdf

To add a new word into the T9 dictionary:
1. After pressing the keys corresponding to the word you want to add, press the 0 key to display the alternative words.
2. When you press the 0 key at the last alternative word, the display shows Spell on the bottom line. Press the Spell soft key.
3. Enter the word you want to add using ABC mode. See "Changing the Text Input Mode" on page 46.
4. Press the OK soft key. The word is added to the T9 dictionary and becomes a word for the associated keypress series.

Response by poster: Ok, thanks so much, that worked, but...

Now I'm having problems because it only allows me to enter words in all caps...

Anyone know what to do?

I have the T-609, fairly similar phone. Mine entered in lower case text when I tried. But upon checking things over the only thing that I could think of was to make sure that when you enter your new text that you press the * key to change the text from upper to lower case. Don't know if that's necessary each time, but... Give it a whirl and see if it works anyway.
