Are there any gyms in Melbourne in Balaclava/Prahran/Windsor/St Kilda where I don't have to pay an annual membership, but can attend on a casual basis?

I can go further than where I've mentioned, but those areas are nearest where I live. For instance, I wouldn't be opposed to going to the daggy surrounding suburbs of Elsternwick, Caulfield, Malvern, etc, for my once weekly gym-fix. In fact, the daggier the gym the better, as I don't have any cool gym clothes.

I don't know of any gyms in that area as I live further out, but I'll ask a few of my mates tomorrow, who live in that area!

This may be a stupid question, but, don't all gyms do that?

The way that gyms work is to try and get as much money from you as possible as early as possible. This is because most people start a fitness regime then drop it after a few weeks / months.

Still, I am sure that if you call the gyms in your area and make it clear that you don't want to pay an annual fee but would like to pay a casual fee when you turn up, I am sure they won't be turning down your money.

No, not the last few gyms I inquired at.

I am not too sure how far out you want to travel, but the gym here at Monash University Clayton does offer casual visits (or at least did). There is another gym at the Caulfield campus (closer to where you are looking) which I presume also allows casual visits.

I should point out that the Clayton gym is far far better though.

Maybe check out a few of the other universities closer to you. Swinburne, RMIT for example.
