How did Jon Pertwee hypnotize himself?

Does anybody have any experience with self-hypnosis as described by the late actor, Jon Pertwee...
In "An Evening with the Doctor", Jon Pertwee describes a self-hypnosis technique the actors in the repertory theatre used to memorize their lines. Since they had to learn 2 plays a week, this was the only way they could possibly do it (according to his story).
They would take a sheet of paper with a hole in it and stare at it until "it" opened wide - "it" presumably was the hole in the paper.
At that point they could look at their scripts and memorize whole pages of lines as if they were photographs.
If you have used this technique, can you describe it more accurately?
