How does the Huff Post People Tracker work?

I very much like the people ranker here on the Eat The Press blog; anyone got something I can use to replicate it, or is this some impressive flash / googlefu that us mere mortals wouldn't be able to replicate?

at the bottom it says powered by google blog search. i clicked on that and typed in hezbollah and got 849 hits in the last week. i can't figure out where they get 2,269 from.

I think "remoting" is a key search term there. I've not seen it used as a verb.
