Decent submarine games?

Are there any decent submarine games for PC or Xbox? Looking for something relatively modern.

Silent Hunter III is supposedly excellent. Not many sub games are made nowadays, though.

Did you mean modern as in modern subs, or modern graphics/sound? SH3 is set in WWII.

(also, be aware that AFAIK SH3 uses Starforce copy-protection, so you might want to take steps to remove it before it does arcane things to your CD burner).

Yeah, Silent Hunter III was a very fun game, particularly once you used some of the excellent player-made mods. Definitely get rid of Starforce, though.

For me, Silent Hunter III was an amazing game with a steep learning curve. It's a simulation, and you can adjust difficulties to get the real claustrophic feeling but this also makes it incredibly boring unless you're in the heat of the battle (keep in mind 75% is looking for targets, patrolling and carefully getting into position -- it's fun and it's not). Eventually the career mode just became to boring, it's frusterating floating around the ocean for several hours and not finding anything to shoot down. The single player missions are much more into the action but are somewhat limited. Graphics sucked, but it appears mods may have changed that.

For modern subs:

Dangerous Waters
. Hands down, no questions, do not pass go, go buy it.

It's available on Steam or through a retail store. I bought mine direct as it came with a 500+ page manual.

The reason I have so many superlatives for this one is because it models a number of subs, an Oliver Perry Missile Frigate, MH-60 Helicopter, and my favorite, the P3-C Orion.

All of these platforms are playable, and multi crewable in multiplayer.

There's a full scenario editor, extensive multiplayer and so on.

It's an absolute blast, but could be perceived as a little dry on the sub side (as modern subs are naturally dry).

But the anti-sub segments are much faster paced and an utter blast.

My favorite was the p3-c Orion mission I played with a friend.
He was piloting and handlign weapons, I was monitoring sonabuoys. We had an EXTREMELY narrow corridor through the straights of gibraltar. If we went out of the corridor, there were spanish Anti Air missiles that would open up.

There was a hijacked Friench Trieste submarine transiting into the mediterranean that we had to stop before it passed a certain point.

The wrinkle was that there was a second Trieste moving OUT of the med to engage, multiple british and american subs plus a full complement of civilian traffic.

We ended up dropping multiple sonabuoys and I had to figure out which sub was which and going which way.

Turned out the trieste was shadowing a large oil tanker. That made it very difficult to get a clean torpedo drop off against it. My pilot managed to get a great torpedo lob off while flying parallel to the straits, breaking off just before we breached the no-fly area.

It's a great game, and might match what you're looking for.

And yeah, Silent Hunter 3 is great too.

On further thought, I'm not sure what class of french submarine it was. But that's just a detail.
