What should I listen to?

What music tracks would you recommend to your friends?
I've cut my music down to a single 1GB mp3 player while I'm travelling around the world, and regularly cycle new music in by lending the player to people with laptops or borrowing a CD or two and ripping them in an internet cafe.
And I don't give the other person any guidance as to what music to give me -- mainstream or "cult", 70s or recent, rock, dance, or classical, English language or whatever -- that's entirely up to them. This way I've ended up with a constantly evolving collection of music other people love, what they hope I might like, and music they think should be better known.
So, AskMe, in their shoes, what music would you give me?
Bonus points if it's freely downloadable or on allofmp3.

I'd dump the mp3 player and take a small SW transistor radio. Listen to local music on your trip.

Seconding Flag and the Chatfilters. "Deleted for the Following Reason" is the best track on the album.
