I'm going to have about an hour to kill before my train leaves South Station, late morning. Is there anyplace relatively close to get a good coffee and just hang out?

Tradesman on Batterymarch St.
Flour on Farnsworth St.

Both are about 10-12 minute walk and are good for hanging out. Not sure about the coffee itself as I'm a tea person.

If it's after hours, the South St. Diner.

Sorelle is just the next street over on Congress.

Tatte at the intersection of High and Summer (right outside station)

Sip Cafe in Post Office Square (a few min walk)

My brother travels a lot for work and knows downtown Boston and North End pretty well. When we lived in the outskirts and he traveled there, we'd often spend part of the trip around the Common and we'd invariably end up at Thinking Cup on Tremont, a 12-13 minute walk from South Station. Nice place, though depending on the time of day could be pretty crowded.

Not a Bostonian but I visit fairly regularly. Thinking Cup is nice, and I'd also suggest Ogawa Coffee on Milk Street.

+1 to Ogawa; requires a little bit of a walk into the Downtown Crossing area but not far. The George Howell cafe in the Godfrey Hotel in the same area is excellent as well.

Gracenote Coffee is also a block or so away from South Station.

I guess I'd also add Tatte to the list - there's one on Summer st. Lots of excellent pastry and food options there to go along with your cup.
