I use Edison Mail on my iPhone. The new mail badge is always wrong

I've been using Edison Mail as the default mail app on my iPhone for several years now. For a variety of reasons I've chosen to stick with it but there is one incredibly annoying thing that I cannot figure out how to fix. The badge on the app icon almost always displays some incorrect number of new emails in my inbox. Why, and how do I fix this??

I have two personal gmail accounts tied to the app. At the moment, the badge I see on the homescreen shows "21." When I open the app, in actuality I have a single new email. If I then read or archive or trash that email and close the app, the badge displays "20." However, if I then open the app and close it again, the badge disappears/no count is present at all which would indicate there is no new email. If I wait a few more minutes, it will again show some badge count, probably 19 or 20. I will then open the app, no new email will be present, I will close the app, and the badge will again disappear.

Is there unread email floating somewhere I am missing that might be causing this? If so, I cannot figure out how to find it. Further, if that were the case, why would the badge ever disappear at all/show no count if those unread emails are always present?

One last note is that for months or years this would happen with badge counts of maybe 4-8 whereas now in the last week it is routinely more like 18-21.

Here are some screenshots

Thanks!

It might just be that you have unread emails deep in your inbox. Do a search on gmail in a web browser for "is:unread" and see what it turns up.

I don't use Edison Mail, but if I was troubleshooting this, I'd look in Settings under Notifications for Edison Mail. For iOS Mail, that has "Customize Notifications" at the bottom, and clicking that lets me check all the accounts that are represented in Mail's badge. I wonder if Edison Mail has something similar that could help, or other Notification settings that clarify what the badge is counting.

This happens to me in a different context, using Thunderbird on MacOS as an imap client for Gmail. The issue was that there were somehow unread messages in the Drafts folder, which is a subfolder of the Inbox. I fixed it this time by manually clicking each one to mark it "Read", but I don't know how I'd fix it in a more efficient or permanent manner.
