Cromulent Guest Bed Mattress Sought
January 3, 2025 6:50 AM   Subscribe

We're kitting out a guest bedroom and we need a minimally decent mattress. This is a bed that will get slept on for no longer than ten or fifteen days at a time every 10-24 months. No one with special needs regarding health or size will sleep on it. It should be a queen. It would be great if it was a mattress in a box so that we didn't need a truck delivery. What are we looking for? Is there an okay brand on Amazon? IKEA maybe? We are looking for something that is "fine" and doesn't cost a lot.

No, we don't want a futon, a hideaway bed, a Murphy bed, or an inflatable. Regular mattress on a frame.

IKEA can do fine. Many of their spring mattresses come all rolled up and will fit in a hatchback with the rear seats down. You should be able to find something that doesn't suck in the $200-$300 range.

We've had very good luck with the Zinus mattresses on Amazon. We have both 8" and 12" in the house.

I decided the 12" is too soft for my back - I sink too much - but I'm on the plus side. That doesn't happen on the 8" beds. I'm pretty sure we'd be happy with any of them, and I suspect the 8" would be comfortable for most people - one of ours doubled as a couch/napping spot in our living room for a couple of years, and it acquired compliments on comfy-ness.

We've always made sure to set them up and give them plenty of time flat to puff up before even putting sheets on them, never had a problem with smell or not puffing up enough.

One son has an IKEA mattress of some sort that is very similar to them, but was significantly more expensive - and, imo, a ridiculous purchase that was to appease his chasing-the-Jones' girlfriend. It's no more comfortable than the less expensive Zinus. And while we are in a metro with an IKEA, it was much easier for the ones that arrived on the porch, while the son had to borrow a rig since the IKEA boxed mattress wouldn't fit in his sedan.

We have had great success with ikea mattresses as well as leesa mattresses. (buy online, made in America). We bought the leesa for a guest room and liked it so much we switched our master to them as well.

I was looking for a cheaper alternative to Casper mattresses for our spare bedroom and landed on the Allswell Luxe Hybrid from Walmart. It is a great value, super cozy, and ships fast in a box.

Zinus. Their frames are also great IMO.

We've been happy with IKEA and Zinus mattresses in the past, though check the reviews - I did once buy a Zinus that basically went "thunk" when you laid down on it, it was so firm.

Still a fan of Tuft & Needle here, for mattresses in a box.

Response by poster: Zinus sounds great because it would allow us to check this box for $200-ish, which would be ideal.

We like Tuft and Needle too, but we paid more like $800 for our queen size mattress.

I like my Novaform 14” mattress from Costco. I like it so much I bought it twice. Very comfortable. The queen is $480. My friend bought it too. It comes in a box.

Zinus is the one. I've slept on 3 or 4 Zinus mattresses and 2 of their frames in various sizes over the years and they've always been serviceable, even if in daily use. Shows up on the porch in shrink wrap, easy enough to drag into the room, cut free, and let expand.

Give Boring a try. I am giving it a try, going to see how it works for me. Overall reviews on Reddit pivot towards positive, and Boring mattresses do not contain fiberglass, as per their website.

Yes, Zinus was sued by multiple firms for the fiberglass in their mattresses. I wouldn't purchase one no matter how cheap. Supposedly they've stopped using it, but it's a crapshoot on whether you'll get a fiberglass free one from the Amazon warehouse at this point. Maybe in a couple years.

We were happy with our IKEA pocket spring mattress for many years of daily use, until we upgraded to a Nest.

I love tuft and needle, but i feel like thats way too much to spend on a guest room mattress.

Several times now i, or someone in my family has needed a cheap bed immediately and we got one of the zinus mattresses on sale. They're surprisingly decent for the price, and way better than the cheap walmart or ikea mattresses imo.

Fancy brands like purple have been dogged on for the fiberglass thing, it's a complete crapshoot at this point. just get a mattress cover and dont take the included cover off any mattress...

We ended up buying from Brooklyn Bedding, but that Walmart mattress was our runner up and it's made in the same factory.

Our solution was an Ikea sofa/bed, which has a pretty firm mattress.

We then added a second Ikea memory foam topper (because one of our demanding guests demanded it).

We then had another different demanding guest who hates memory foam tell us they hated it, so we stash it in the closet when they show up.

Weird, but ... problem solved we think? guests have a (very simple) choice and that choice seems to make everyone happy.

FWIW, Consumer Reports didn't like the nicer Zinus much (the Green Tea). It scored 66/100, and it wasn't recommended.

However, they DID recommend another affordable mattress, the Best Price Mattress 12" Signature Green Tea, which scored 76/100, and is CR Recommended. It costs $300.
