I think there's a name for this jacket style?

I'd like to get a new version of a jacket I had when I was younger: a heavy-ish windbreaker with a knitted collar, cuffs and waistband. Sort of like a baseball jacket but the collar came about halfway down the chest and it was buttoned.

I think what you're looking for is called a bomber jacket.

Nah, bomber jackets zip up! This sounds like a variant cut of a varsity jacket to me. I don't know of a name for this style though.

Response by poster: Thanks but the bomber and varsity jackets are more like what I was thinking of as a baseball jacket. The collar comes down quite low - imagine a knitted cardigan but the torso and sleeves are fabric.

Response by poster: After googling cardigans, it might be that “shawl collar” was the term I was trying to remember. I see lots of heavy sweaters but unfortunately no jackets.

The half-zip style is called a pullover. Searching “bomber pullover jacket” gives some results of the style of jacket you describe.

Does "sailor collar varsity jacket" return promising results?

I’m getting even better results with “vintage pullover jacket.” Not every feature you describe but many options that are very close. You

Bomber jackets also button, at least in the fashion world. :-)

There are some vintage examples of bomber jackets with shawl collars, but none matching your exact specifications. They were definitely a thing, though in the 80s and early 90s.

Barn coat?

They usually have knitted cuffs you can't see inside the sleeve. The current season has small collars, but that just reflects the manufacturer's trend to cutting costs on material. I believe I have seen them in the past with extremely generous lapels that you can turn up to keep the snow out of your face as you make the trudge from the house to the barn.

The might also be called an Adirondack jacket, or a camping jacket, as they were the forerunner of the car coat, warm enough to go outside on a bitter morning, but cut without any skirts to make it easy to squat while milking, or making a fire.

Sounds like a varsity jacket to me... except for the long collar.

Perhaps a mock-neck retro baseball jacket.

Back in my day, these were indeed one available style of varsity jackets, but the ones you bought direct from varsity companies, not at a retail store. Maybe try googling to see if those still exist? They were endlessly customizable so you’d have been able to buy one without all the extra embroidery.

Like this sweet, sweet vintage Members Only jacket? Or maybe this one? Most of the vintage ones are zip only, but some combine zipper and buttons.

I'm having a lot of fun trying to find this! The closest I've gotten is this two tone knit jumper which you can buy.

What has going for it:
• Shawl collar with buttons halfway down the chest
• Ribbing at the cuffs and waistband

What it lacks:
• Windbreaker fabric in the torso and arms

I'll keep on looking!

Response by poster: DING DING DING! Thank you Oneirodynia! I think it might've been nearly that exact DAKS jacket. Mine was a more of a green plaid and had flat plastic buttons but otherwise it looks the same. The mid 80s date checks out too!

…unfortunately too small but I,m glad to have my search terms.
