Tell Me About Your Non-Spring, Non-Foam Mattress

I need a new mattress. I do not like springs. Foam is too hot. Tell me about a mattress you love!

I'm a side-sleeper that tends to sleep hot. I am tiny. My partner is a giant, and a side-sleeper that tends to sleep hot. We are both getting back pain from my way-too-old traditional-spring mattress. His tossing and turning keeps me awake, and neither of us are getting good sleep when he's here.

I'm considering a Purple or maybe a Helix. Or... I know there's other alternatives to springs and foams out there. But they're all pricey, so tell me which one you love?

We really enjoyed the helix - it sleeps pretty cool for foam, supports two large sleepers who have a variety of back issues, and my partner isn’t disturbed by my tosssing and turning. . We’ve had it about 6 years.

If you two are that different, consider two different twin-sized mattresses in a king sized bedframe with the connector strip in the middle.

Seconding latex. We've had ours for nine years, you wouldn't know it's not beans new. It's supportive for side/back combo sleepers, and adaptable as personal and environmental temperatures change. I'll never even bother trying another kind of mattress.

If you want a really different suggestion: buckwheat hull mattress. Substantially cooler than anything other than a hammock, but you have to like firm mattresses and they do have a (natural) scent that hopefully won't bother you. People swear by them for back pain, but that probably has more to do with moving to a firmer mattress than it is the buckwheat hull mattress specifically.

Ours is from sleeponlatex. It's been great for years. My partner is also large and sleeps very hot. I like that it's firm, cool, and unchanging over time.

The only negative is that it is incredibly heavy and unwieldy to move.

Perhaps this will help:

We have a hybrid spring/latex mattress from Nest. Sleeps cool, the top layer of latex foam can be replaced in the future if needed without trashing the whole mattress. We have it in "firm" and it is extremely comfortable for me as a side sleeper. Supposedly their Sparrow mattress sleeps cool as well.

Mattresses are one of those things where a trip to a store really helps. You don't need to buy anything (even go in with the idea you won't on your first trip) but spending some time laying on different configurations and types is very helpful.

It sounds like there's been a lot of change in mattress technology since you last bought one. For example - we have a hybrid which has springs but varying layers of foam on top that mean we get the bounce without actually feeling them at all, and it's not all foam so it doesn't retain a ton of heat. Mattresses, sofas and chairs you will spend a lot of time in are worth taking your time and experiencing in real-life prior to purchase.

Seconding LOOKING's recommendation. That site is excellent.

Love my latex mattress, it's bouncy rather than sink-y and has great support. I got it at sleeponlatex, and when it was a bit too firm for me, they gave me half off a 3 inch topper that added exactly the right amount of give + support.

You can build your own air mattress solution. I've been using one for 10 years and it has been the best solution for me so far (I've used spring and memory foam)

pumps and mattresses, outer shell

Might cost a little more. Might need some effort to find the correct components.
