Pet transportation options

There's a cat that I would really like to adopt, but unfortunately she's been relocated from a shelter in NYC (where I am) to a shelter in Kingston, New York (90 miles north). Are there options to transport her back home that I may be missing?

Looking at travel options, I can definitely get to the shelter using a bus (Trailways), but then would not be able to return that way since only service animals are allowed.

Without being able to drive myself (and knowing no one with a car), it does seem my only option is to take a taxi from Kingston to the Poughkeepsie Train Station and take a Metro-North train back into the city. The taxi leg of this looks likely pretty expensive, but if it's the only option then I'll definitely make it work!

Am I (along with Google Maps) missing other or better solutions? I've been wondering about possible options such as trying to request a rideshare using the 511NY Rideshare program, but it seems unlikely that there'd be anyone doing a return commute from Kingston to NYC.

(As for the cat, the very same day that an ACC volunteer posted her first video, she was included in their New Hope program and departed from Manhattan (about one hour before I would have been able to get out-of-work to adopt her). Presumably since she's an older cat with thyroid issues, she was viewed as having low odds for adoption. A few days later she showed up as available for adoption at her new shelter, and I'm hoping to undue my previous failure!)

Thanks for any ideas!

Did you contact the shelter and ask them for ideas? Often animal rescue groups will co-ordinate several people to transport the animal, each person doing a segment of the trip. quick search turned up: Link.

Another option is that if these two shelters are regularly trading animals back and forth, a volunteer may be able to bring the cat back down the NYC shelter if they are planning to head back that way. Definitely worth asking.

If you aren't able to make this work another way, you might message Beth Stern on Instagram and see if she has any leads on organizations or individuals who might be able to help with a ride or transporting the kitty. This is what she does! Keep us posted!

Are you on Ravelry? The LSG forum organises kittenballs.

Definitely, contact the shelter. For years, The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals' "Wheels of Hope" program provided transportation services for ACC; in 2019, Best Friends Animal Society took over the task for ACC and its New Hope Partners.

Ask around, and ask the shelter. If I was still in Albany I'd be delighted to have a little weekend cat transport adventure for a Mefite.

You could take a taxi across the river to the Rhinecliff Amtrak station. That is only a few miles. Amtrak has fairly frequent service on the Hudson line. That is assuming Amtrak allows cats in carriers.
