No turn by turn directions in Maps using CarPlay

I recently got a new iPhone 14 to replace my old phone. Everything worked fine before that. Now when I’m using Apple Maps through CarPlay in my BMW I don’t get turn-by-turn audio directions, I do get told about speed checks and red-light cameras just not the turns. Everything else in CarPlay seems to be working well. Any ideas?

Best answer: Check the speaker icon?

When I ran into that problem it was because the turn by turn volume was very low. It is such a bad user experience that I feel like I am probably mistaken. But, the only way I found to increase the volume was to press the volume up button while the inaudible directions were being spoken.

Yeah, it's probably set to 'alerts only' but I also had the problem with the volume level and testing my reflexes to adjust it only when a voice prompt was playing.

There could be two or three things going on.
  1. A couple of iOS versions ago, Apple changed the location of the control for turning speech during directions on and off. It used to be on the phone. Now it is on the righthand side of the CarPlay screen. Once you start directions, if you tap that button it lets you choose among turn-by-turn speech, speech only for alerts, and no speech.
  2. As others have noted, you may have the volume turned way down, but...
  3. You can only adjust the volume while Siri is actually giving you directions. This is annoying, and it means you have to figure out when Siri is likely talking, and try cranking up the volume just then. (It might also work to do this while Siri is talking to you about something else. That might be easier.)

Response by poster: Thank you for the help. I believe I’ve figured it out.

Iris Gambol had the answer. This has nothing to do with CarPlay.

Tonight I was sitting in my condo and asked for directions to a local store. When I hit Go a small speaker appeared on the right of the screen. There are three levels under the speaker button on the right of the screen on the phone. There is silence, there is full directions and in the middle there is an option that only gives alerts. Somehow in setting up my new phone I ended up with that option selected rather than the full option.

To think I drove all the way from New Jersey to North Carolina and back without knowing that last week and I only made one wrong turn while going to dinner one night.
