Open source FreshBooks alternative?

My question might be stuck in the pre-SaaS era, but I wonder if there's such a thing as a free, open source invoicing program that does the stuff FreshBooks does? I don't need complicated bookkeeping. Just the Freshbooks-like ability to create invoices, but also to track whether people have paid and to add up income over a given period of time.

Obviously I can create invoices using templates on Word. But I'm also interested in the invoices being automatically kept track of and all that stuff. Or is there, like, a popular Excel macro that will do this stuff?

If not, is there a cheaper alternative to $25/mo. Freshbooks? Should I just switch to Quicken?

Have you looked at GnuCash?

I use zoho for my small business and even their mid tier paid plan is only $100 a year. I'm 99% sure the free one includes invoicing and tracking. I think the limit is the number of contacts and automatically syncing with your bank. I've used it for 8 years and they have done a good job of adding and upgrading without ever breaking the look and feel of it so I don't have to spend a week relearning it. Highly recommended.

I've been using Wave for about a year now and really like it. It's free and has all the basic customer/invoicing/payment tracking that you need.
