Bathtub overflow drain cover too small?

I'm replacing the toggle-stopper cover on an older bathtub with a plain overflow drain cover and a pull-up stopper. Screws fit for the drain cover, but the plate isn't big enough to cover the hole. Options?

The old toggle in this bathtub froze in the up position and was useless. So I decided to swap it for a plain cover and a pull-up style stopper.

But the replacement is too small to cover the unfinished parts of the tub drain hole. The two screws are in the correct places and thread in fine, but there's unenameled finish and gunk in about a half-inch ring around the outside.

Do they make larger overflow drain covers with the same screw measurement? If so, can someone point me to them? If not, is there ... some other way I can cover it? A big gasket or something? Or are the toggle-style covers bigger, and I should use one of those? I'm just trying to help my wonderful pregnant wife to take a relaxing bath!

What is the diameter of the overflow cover that is too small?

Best answer: Take the existing one and the measurements you need to the best, old school hardware or plumbing supply place near you.

Why not leave the old toggle style cover in place?

If you don’t like the toggle sticking out, you could remove and replace it with a stainless bolt and an acorn nut.

Response by poster: What is the diameter of the overflow cover that is too small?

Sorry, didn't expect to be out of the house all day after asking this question! The new, too-small cover is 3" diameter on the nose. The old cover is broken in half, but my best estimate is that was 3.5" - 3.6" diameter.

Why not leave the old toggle style cover in place?

I was trying to make my question less wordy and didn't realize I'd edited out an important bit of information. In trying to un-stick the toggle (Mrs. penduluum was trying to run a bath), I broke the cover in half. That's what necessitated all of the rest of this.

Best answer: Might be tricky to find that size, since they are normally all about the same diameter. I would recommend going to a local plumbing supply shop (where plumbers shop, not a big box store) and asking them as they are likely to know if such a thing can be ordered. They will know if this is something specific to your region as well.
