In this photo of a kitchen in New Zealand, what is the copper or brass looking thingy on the counter under the green plates on the right?
Not too helpful, but a slight enlargement of the item here. Am I going to feel foolish once you tell me? It will be worth it! I've looked at this photo and wondered so many times!

Best answer: I agree with shornco -- that bent pipe shape is extremely common in salt pigs.

And just in case - a "salt pig" is just a container for salt, usually one that's open so that you can grab a pinch at will when cooking.
