Searching for a medium weight jacket for spring and autumn (think warm days, cool nights) that I can apply iron on patches to and maybe not denim?
Usually I would love to purchase a jean jacket but uh, I wear black denim jeans with my Docs a lot so I feel like I probably shouldn't go the ole Canadian tuxedo route.
I am looking for the kind of jacket that you can layer a hoodie under, as well put some patches on it. What kind of damn jacket should I get? Or should I say, hell with it and just go for denim anyway?
Donkey shines!

Lightwash denim jacket, black jeans, and Docs sounds like your standard issue cold weather metal/punk/dive bar fare, especially with patches. I say go for it!

Try a search for "canvas field jacket." Mine was thrifted and is probably military surplus, so I can't point you to it, but it's my spring/fall go-to, layers well, and I'd think it would take iron-on patches just fine.

Here I am repping Big Bud Press again. Do any of these jackets or overshirts appeal to you?

Field jackets would work. Alternatively, look at non-denim chore coats.

My teen got this Pocket Overshirt from Zara. The fabric is a smooth cotton, almost a twill, and you could totally put patches on it.

My go-to is a military surplus field jacket. I believe mine is a French F1 jacket.
Mine is pretty light weight. For something slightly warmer, I like trucker jackets in non-denim colors/fabrics—tan canvas or corduroy. IMO the color difference is enough to avoid the Canadian tuxedo look when worn with blue or black jeans

I'm a tall man so YMMV but I finally upgraded by old coat (a vintage coat very similar to xo's Zara overshirt) to a canvas field jacket from LL Bean (their version is called a utility trucker coat). Its cut is fairly boxy and coded male, so it may not work for you but you can totally wear a hoodie or sweater underneath.
