Old movie about falling in love with a ghost?

I watched Blithe Spirit (1945) last weekend. It was entertaining enough (if you overlook the dated gender stereotypes) but it wasn't the film I thought I was going to see. Please help me remember the other one.

A long time ago, I watched a romantic old film – I think it was in black & white – in which the protagonist fell in love with a girl who was a ghost. She was shown semi-transparently, I think, rather than with a green hue like in the David Lean film. I don't remember the name of the film, but I later assumed it was Blithe Spirit, which I now know to be wrong. Any ideas what it could've been?

I don't remember if Portrait of Jennie (1948) ever uses a transparent effect, but it might near the end - may be worth glancing over a plot summary to see if it rings any bells

Any chance it just might be High Spirits?

I agree that Portrait of Jeannie sounds like the most likely candidate.

Just on the off-chance it's been long enough ago that your memory might be hazy, I do want to mention The Ghost and Mrs Muir though. The ghost is male and the protagonist is female, but otherwise could fit.

This could be a stretch, but Topper (1937) used a transparent ghost effect with Constance Bennett and Cary Grant.

Response by poster: These all sound like interesting films to check out, but none sound like the one I'm thinking of. I realise now it'll be hard for me to know for sure unless I watch it. Thanks anyway!

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, 1947 is a classic. There was also a tv series done in the late 1960s.

Could it be "I Married a Witch" with Veronica Lake? She is a 17th Century witch who comes back to cause mischief. I believe she is ghostly for part of it.
