Experience with port site metastasis?

Looking for anything I can learn about this medical issue.

Short history: my sister had a hysterectomy which unexpectedly revealed a small amount of early stage ovarian cancer. The cancer was caught in time and, after chemo, she received a clean bill of health. The surgery was laparoscopic.

The surgery left several small incisions. One of these, below her left rib cage, developed a bump under the skin. Over time, it became red and angry looking and painful to the touch. The doctor diagnosed "port site metastasis", a rare surgical complication in which cancer develops at the site of one (or more I suppose) of incisions where surgical instruments were inserted.

Dr. Google is not encouraging so I am coming to Dr. Ask Me to see if anyone here can enlighten me about ANYTHING related to this conditions. Apparently it is has a 1% occurrence rate post-surgery and I have found very little information. Thanks to you all.

I don't know anything about this topic, but PubMed is a good place to look for medical research papers. PubMed doesn't give you the full text of the paper, – just the reference. But once you have the reference, you can usually get the whole article through SciHub.

Oh, one more thing. I've found that my local medical school library allows the general public to come into the library, and the reference librarians are typically very helpful (and you don't need to have any affiliation with the university to get their help).

Here is an overview paper. Not my research area so I can't comment on the quality of the article.

This paper includes a section on port site metastases.

And in both papers, there are lots of additional references to follow up. That said, if you are not science-oriented these might be a challenging read. You might reach out to one of the patient-oriented organizations, like a cancer society, cancer support group, or a local cancer centre .

Response by poster: Thank you so much for pointing me in the direction of some additional information. This will be so helpful.
