Help creating a website?

I have a website that I made myself on Squarespace. I have zero skills in this department, and it looks very DIY. I'd like to upgrade and make it look less DIY, but I'd like to avoid spending a ton of money. I'm a freelancer with a couple of different niches, and the site is basically a resume/about me/calling card, with no real moving parts. Where would I find someone to help me with this, and what am I looking at spending?

In theory, you can look on Fiverr but in my experience (similar to yours, had a not great DIY site on GoDaddy, wanted someone to use the basic materials and improve the design, did not want to pay 3-10K, which I have actually heard of) it's hard to know how to narrow it down. There are a billion people on there who advertise themselves for this kind of thing, and I picked without much to go on and probably paid unrealistically little and....she barely did anything. I had to undo some stuff. But in theory, you can probably find someone on there to zhoozh your website.

Is your freelance speciality barter-able? Could Metafilter Jobs be an option?
