Looking for darker-skinned Youtube creators
August 6, 2023 1:29 AM   Subscribe

Hi, I am reaching an understanding that my Youtube subscriptions are mostly to lighter-skinned creators. I want to add some variety to my entertainment. My interests are - engineering, aviation, cooking, coockig theory, music theory, woodworking, boat-building, making in general & science. If you know of non-English channels that might interest me and have good subtitles, those are also an option. I am already subscribed to the channel of Jeremy Fielding so you can skip recommending him. He is a good example of who I am looking to add to my subscriptions. Thanks for sharing, Hanan Cohen

Check out Rajiv Surendra for all kinds of interesting videos on making things and cooking. Several of his videos draw from his Sri Lankan heritage.

I watch more Rich Rebuilds than is probably good for me and I think you should too.

I asked a question recently about nonwhite cooking channels. There are both some good answers and some examples I gave there. Middle Eats is the one I watch the most.

Sohla El-Waylly has a huge number of cooking videos available on YouTube. I particularly liked the ones that she did during the pandemic in her small New York apartment kitchen (these might be the "Off-Script with Sohla" videos on Food52?) She also has a bunch of videos where she recreates historical dishes on the History Channel, and there's another bunch of "ingredient challenge" videos that she does with her husband Ham on the NYT Cooking channel.

Here's a 1/2 answer: Sailing Uma is a channel about a sweet, capable and plucky young couple who is (currently) rebuilding their sailboat. I say half, because she is dark skinned, from Haiti. He is light skinned, from Canada. Previous to the rebuild, they travel around the world, while also working on quite a few boat projects.

Boatbuilding.

My first thought was Japanese traditional boats. I suggest you look for websites, not just YouTube. I found one site here.

Tips of a Shipwright have a couple of episodes from Chile.

So happy to see another rec for See Jane Drill. Leah is a treasure.

Doesn't quite fit any of your categories, but T1J has been one of my subscriptions that I have found to be consistently good. Mostly essays on interesting bits about media, and social issues.

Foreign Man In A Foreign Land mostly does essays on culture and significant current news. Found the channel via a partner video with Not Just Bikes, and wound up subscribing.

Jeremy Fielding makes very interesting engineering videos, and has a talent for explaining and presenting information in a very approachable way.

BlackForager is awesome, she makes mostly short videos about foraging and cooking with wild foods in the Northeastern US.

I like La'Ron Readus for film and tv deep dives, especially about genre movies/tv.
