I’m going on a trip to an area I’m unfamiliar with and have been tasked with making the plans. I’ve visited Chicago before but this is the markedly different other side of the border. What are the ideal things to see do and eat over there for non outdoorsy people?

I haven’t been yet, but the Mascot Hall of Fame sounds fun.

Miller Beach has a farmers market and a few cute shops and restaurants. (My personal knowledge of it is pretty out of date, though.)

I have driven through Indiana several times and highly recommend the Indiana Dunes State Park! Really beautiful.

If I were in that area I would make sure to visit Michigan City for the Old Lighthouse Museum and the graves of Harriet Colfax and Ann Hartwell, whom I read about here on Metafilter!

I enjoyed stopping at the Albanese Candy Factory & store in Merriville IN. Sadly they don't do tours any longer, and I'm not sure if the back wall of the store has the windows onto the production floor or not.

But the store is great, lots of gummis, chocolates and they even make some snack mixes for savory fans. So a fun stop to get some treats for other activities.

It's on rt30, so maybe a little out of your way.

The windows are there, but they are now behind the counters, so you can’t get close.

But the store is great

And the company's sour gummis are supposed to be top notch -- really zingy, and made in a range of flavors (scroll down to see the recommendation).
