Is a wool mattress topper worth it?

Is a wool mattress topper worth it? Not interested in latex.

I have the Ikea Haugsvär. Ten years ago I would not have had to ask this. I was able to sleep on rock-hard mattresses with no problems. That, sadly, is no longer the case. I still like the Haugsvär, since I prefer a firm mattress to a soft one, but I wake up with a sore neck some days. I am a side sleeper. I have considered various pillows, but have come to the conclusion that what I really need is a topper, so just a slight softening of the mattress. I had a latex mattress before this one, but got rid of it because it was too hot and sagged in the middle after just six months. I have long wanted a wool mattress topper, but they are (for me) very expensive, some costing more than the mattress itself. My question is, does anyone out here have one, and was it worth the money? I do not want a latex topper because latex is too hot. Furthermore, a friend had a wool mattress years ago that I borrowed and I loved it. I feel it would be worth the money, but reviews and opinions vary, and this is a topper, not an actual mattress. I would just buy it to try it, but most places that make these toppers will not accept returns, or charge a hefty return fee.

TL;DR: Do you have a wool mattress topper and do you like it? If so, why?

Wool is just as hot as latex, if not more so. Even with a cotton cover, wool is very effective at trapping heat. Amazon sells memory foam toppers that stay cool and don't flatten out after a year like wool does.

I like my wool topper for winter, but I don't feel like it does all that much to make overly firm mattresses more comfortable. I have a 10" cooling memory foam-topped dense foam mattress from Amazon, and I layer the wool topper on in winter for warmth and extra squish. I've had this mattress for 6 years and it's still exactly the same as when I bought it. I'm also a side sleeper and I swear by those memory foam sculpted pillows. Haven't woken up with neck pain since I got one. The bed was $300, but that pillow set me back like $125. Worth it though.
