Firefox on iPad issue

For years now I’ve occasionally had a website icon that I’ve pinned to my homepage swap for the icon of another site. I’ve just put up with it but the other day my MeFi icon swapped to TikTok’s. I don’t even do tiktok! This is unacceptable. Help?

I’m using Firefox 105.1 on my iPad (7th gen). It has the option to have a “Firefox home” as your homepage and when you open a new tab, with a row of pinned bookmarks and a selection of most visited or recently visited other sites that are automatically generated after your pins. There’s other stuff you can have show up there but I’ve turned everything else off. Unfortunately Firefox on iOS is a bit of a janky mess, but I’ve been a devotee for decades at this point so it is what it is. But there doesn’t seem to be any way to force it to refresh the icons (are these favicons, or something else? They’re big, like a desktop shortcut) and I’ve tried unpinning and pinning them again but the wrong icon is still there. Yes, I’ve tried turning it off and on again. It’s happened for a few other sites, a local news blog is stuck with what looks to be an older version of the Twitter icon, at some point AO3 was target but it’s since switched to a plain A on a salmon background, etc.

Please help me not think of tiktok every time I click on metafilter, I’m sure you understand my distress.

Huh, this used to happen to me on Android's FF, but hasn't for a few years now. I always assumed it was related to me generally having many hundreds of tabs open at a time, but who knows.

Can you try clearing FF's cache?

Response by poster: I have tried to figure out how to clear the cache but it doesn’t appear in the settings on this browser, or at least I can’t find them? I know where to find them on the desktop version of the browser, but the iOS one is very different.

In the older version of Firefox I have on my iPad, there’s a hamburger in the upper right corner, when you tap on it, you get a large menu. Tap on Settings, and you get a ton of controls and settings, including Website Data. There’s a button in there to clear all website data.

That said, this sounds more like it’s an iOS issue. Have you tried removing some icons and adding them back?

I have no idea how iOS works, but on Android you'd clear the cache through the Apps section of the general Android settings menu, not from within FF. (On edit, I take that back - I just checked and there is a section in FF's own settings menu too. Not certain if it does exactly the same thing as the Android system menu option.)

Can you delete an icon for a site, then recreate it? In other words, don't just unpin it, but actually delete it altogether?
