September means 15 More Boston Location-Based Riddles!!
September 3, 2022 8:49 AM   Subscribe

I'm still in a competitive scavenger hunt that takes me across Boston, to be the first to find a small token. They are placed in the last few days and just released. It's fun, but I'm in a competition where we are supposed to "use all of our resources". Askmi is a resource, right?

Last time, people seemed to really enjoy helping me solve these clues! Even if you aren't familiar with Boston, often the right keywords into Google can certainly help!

I need to go to the location, and then actually find the token. Then - I redeem the token for around $230!! If you would like to join and hunt yourselves, you are definitely welcome too - it's called the golden goose scavenger hunt, which you can google.

I've been told that the clues can be referencing businesses, statues, murals, streets, anything around Boston. Usually the first half of the riddle leads to the general spot, and then the second half leads to the specific spot. But, sometimes it doesn't follow those regulations.

Rules: They are usually outdoors. They aren't in cemeteries. You don't have to pay to enter. No treasures are hidden anywhere near train tracks or in train stations.

121
Inside my little village, out of town,
There is a little nook that’s been carved out,
Where a man who rides his wagon through the trees
Can find himself a nice and comfy seat.

122
The stately woman appraises her downfall
With steady eyes that do not shake at all.
But those who fight for freedom might appraise
A twinkle in her otherwise dire gaze.

123
A creature from a purple drawing book
Has left the pages of his past to look
Around the city. His brethren catch a sight
Of something to the left, but he looks right.

124
The Bulfinch style enamored the heart
Of a proponent for the Cornish arts.
She offered her suggestions, and gave pardon
While watching from her seat within the garden.

125
A simple scene of soft, splashing water,
But effort in the tons to get it there.
A lot of heavy lifting, and a jet
Were used to haul it from Connecticut.

126
One hundred days of games and barbecues.
One hundred days of camping and canoes.
One hundred reasons to exult and cheer
Within the warmest season of the year.

127
The cherubim with chunky cheeks apprize
The splashing water with their stoic eyes,
And offer prickly bundles to the guests
Who gather at the entrance to the west.

129
You know your journey to the isle is done
When you are greeted by three different tongues
Which tell you to proceed upon your path
Until you reach the blue gate in the back.

130
A woman with a halo, a sturdy hand,
A brown bear roaring, and a money man—
Four warnings to the people passing by
That Mother Nature’s fever’s running high.

132
At this brick hall for huskies, it’s advised
That students keep their eyes upon the prize
By hanging up the vices that they have
To focus on their spelling and their math.

133
The telescopes along the ground all served
As assistance for the scientists to observe
The 707 soar into the stratus,
And turn a corner for the age of science.

134
The pig has flown the pen in swinging style,
Ascending to the clouds with all his guile.
And though he’s donning fanciful apparel,
The spirit he sips is bottom of the barrel.

136
The man who makes the music is aglow,
Just like the sun he insufflates below,
As dragonflies cut through the dewy fog
Amidst the barking of illegal dogs.

139
Three options represented by three gates
Are guarded by two daunting tribes of greats
Who wield two sets of tools, and recommend
The gate that’s right for you to apprehend.

140
A creature from the past was modeled when
Just five suggestions of his berth had been
Unearthed, and though he’s not exactly right,
He’s still able to induce awe and fright.

123. Ed Emberley is still living in Ipswich, and wrote a purple drawing book.

Best answer: 140 has to be the Sinclair tyrannosaurus at the Boston museum of science made in ‘64 for a world fair. https://svpow.com/2012/07/11/horrible-tyrannosaurs-of-the-boston-museum-of-science/

Ok, sorry for lots of posts, I like these sort of things. 139 could well be Boston public library entrance. 3 gates, and seals above doors for Boston and Massachusetts, the people in the reliefs seem to be carrying items/tools maybe .

Nice bbqturtle, glad to hear! It seems like a really nice hunt. Curious, which one - dinosaur I presume?
I'm looking at these from London UK, so no local knowledge. Will see if any more make sense later when the kids are in bed.

Best answer: 122: I bet that's the statue of Mary Dyer at Beacon and Bowdoin. She was a Quaker who was hanged because she fought for religious liberty, and her statue is across from the site of her hanging. (It's not Harriet Tubman because of the line about "downfall.")

124: This is a reference to Rose Standish Nichols. She was part of the Cornish Arts Colony, she had a house on Beacon Hill, she was a peace and suffrage activist, and she was a noted writer about gardening (who actually attended MIT as a "special student" for landscape architecture in the late 1890s before it was coed). She lived at 55 Mount Vernon St. on Beacon Hill, which is now a museum dedicated to her. None of the gardens she designed in Boston seem to still exist, so the museum is your best bet.'

132: Matthews Arena, maybe? It is the building where the Huskies play and the entry is brick.

If anyone wants to join the hunt, you can find out more information on the Discord Server. A solved, found clue is worth about $250!

123 presumably is the Make Way For the Ducklings statue? The story originated as a drawing book, perhaps the cover was purple. https://www.wbur.org/news/2016/12/22/make-way-for-ducklings

Make Way for Ducklings is green and always has been (I have a very early edition that was originally my mom's). And all of the ducks look left or center.

I am betting it is connected to Ed Emberley's Purple Drawing Book. Ed Emberley is from Malden. There is an Ed Emberley mural at Boston Children's Hospital. There is also a mural on Exchange St. in Malden by David R. FitzGerald Park, but the one in the Gallery at Children's Hospital features a toucan looking right while every other character looks left or straight out.

Response by poster: I love the Ed Emberley connection but those specific murals don't seem to fit. Boston Childrens isn't open to the public and malden is out of the range of the hunt :(

Looking more at the Emberly connection, there is a mural (not by him but featuring his characters) in Cambridge which is included as a possible location in the rules for the hunt. It's in the library, could be it, but from looking at the pictures, I'm not sure I see any correlation with the looking left/right part of the clue.

Best answer: Thanks to all the Ed Emberley suggestions, I found the clue! It was a mural with three of the "blue guys" from the "Purple Drawing Book" on Naco Taco's in Cambridge.
