Has this film technique found in The French Dispatch been used elsewhere

In The French Dispatch, there's a moment (18m30s) where a transition happens and I'm wondering if it has been used previously in any other films (to avoid spoilers, I'll detail it below)

The character of Moses Rosenthaler "switches/transitions" from being played by Tony Revolori (young Rosenthaler) to Benicio Del Toro (old/current Rosenthaler) while the two actors are in frame at the same time. It's a beautiful moment and I'm wondering if there's any antecedent elsewhere in film.

I can't think of an exact match but this type of on-screen hand-off to another self does occur now and then!

Life and Death of Colonel Blimp: an older man jumps into a pool and comes out the other side his younger self to start the story of his life.

Lost Highway: The main character inexplicably changes into a different person about 2/3 of the way through the film (I can't quite remember).

There's also a film I can't think of but two actresses play the same woman interchangeably throughout the movie.

It's Bunuel, That Obscure Object Of Desire.

It calls to mind the Dr Who transitions a little- similar but not the same.

Adding on to BlackLeotardFront’s list of almost but not quite: in Field of Dreams, the Moonlight Graham character walks off the field as the kid with briefcase in Pulp Fiction, there’s a shot of legs transforming, and the next time you see his face, he’s Burt Lancaster.

Metropolis (recently discussed on Fanfare) has the transition of RobotMaria to HumanMaria.

If you’re open to TV renditions of this, Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal has done it a few times when aging/de-aging the child actor[s] in the show. Episode 3 has a major occurrence, iirc.

Sorry, missed the edit window. It was episode 4 that I was thinking of, with the slide.

Todd solondz' Palindromes has a main character called aviva who is played by multiple people if that counts not sure they're ever on screen at same time as I think they represented different facets of her personality and experiences IIRC
