Piccolo Animale

In 1993 my family took a train trip in Tuscany, either from Florence to/from San Gimignano or Florence to/from Venice. My father, speaking no Italian accidentally bought two tickets for small animals on the trip instead of his two children. Can you help me figure out if he overpaid or underpaid?

This is a favorite story of his that I've heard growing up a lot. He'll talk about how the ticket taker came in looked at the tickets, then started looking all over for the animals, before finally looking at us and exclaiming "oh! piccolo animale!", laughing then handing the tickets back.

I would have been 5 and my sister 3 at the time so my memory is quite sketchy! This is in part why I don't know 100% sure which train ride it might have been.

I've tried looking this up over the years but I also don't speak Italian and am not sure where to start looking. I'm curious how many lira it would have been and what the difference might have been in price if possible! Definitely not trying to ruin his story with facts, more of an interest myself.

Are you 100% certain this wasn’t a joke on the ticket-taker’s part? I’ve never run across a carry-on animal ticket on any Italian trains.

Nevermind that bit of misinformation, ItaliaRail says they do exist, at half the standard rate (not sure how that compares to kids’ fares).

From the ItaliaRail link: "Many trains in Italy and beyond offer a discounted fare between 30% & 50% off the Adult fare for Children."
