COVID-quarantine specific travel insurance?

I've got an upcoming trip. I want insurance for exactly one thing: The cost of accommodation in case I get COVID and have to quarantine before returning. Is it possible to get this? What is my cheapest option (that will actually pay out)?

Best answer: Not sure this is quite a match, but our son is going on a class trip to DC next week and we bought a “OneTrip Cancellation Plus” policy from Allianz — in case he tests positive before or during the trip. There is an “Epidemic Coverage Endorsement” on it that seems like it should cover most/all COVID-related issues before or during the trip to at least some extent. No idea whether that would play out in practice - hope we don’t need to find out.

Costwise it didn’t seem bad - after entering the price of the trip the coverage cost about 3% of that.

I recently got this as a one-time add-on via my home insurance.

Hey, this is what I do for a living!

The short version is: no plan covers all of the costs of COVID quarantine, but there are some travel medical plans that will defray your costs. Many plans cover COVID-19 "the same as any other sickness" - which means they will only cover quarantine if you are ill enough to require significant medical care.

Worldtrips Atlas has some coverage for COVID quarantine but in many countries it will not cover your full costs. (This is the most generous coverage that I am aware of.) Seven Corners Liaison also offers coverage for quarantine but the circumstances they cover are narrow and specific. (Must be medically required and not a "recommended self-quarantine," must be 24 hours a day.) GeoBlue Voyager only covers quarantine if it is "medically necessary" - i.e. you are sick enough to require hospitalization - not if you are asymptomatic or lightly symptomatic and required to quarantine.

Allianz OneTrip Cancellation Plus has zero coverage for COVID quarantine. That is a trip cancellation plan, not a travel medical plan. If you want coverage for quarantine you will need a travel medical plan.

Also - my recommendations were mostly for US residents and citizens. If you are from another country, your options will be different. Plans that cover quarantine are pretty limited.
