How the Graham Crumbles
April 15, 2022 10:47 AM   Subscribe

I bought a bag of honey graham crumbs awhile back to make a specific recipe, didn't care for the recipe, and now I have most of a 1kg bag of graham crumbs to use up, and the recipes I'm seeing online that call for them don't have much appeal. MeFites, what are your favourite graham crumb-requiring recipes? I'm hoping for suggestions that aren't super sweet, and don't call for very artificial/highly processed ingredients such as instant mixes or marshmallows.

My go-to would be lemon meringue or key lime pie!

Italian ricotta cheesecake.
(I haven't used this particular recipe. The one I use doesn't call for any crust at all, but i add a graham crust anyway and it's great.) There are lots of variants online.

You can mix it with some butter & sugar, bake it, & make graham cracker streusel for topping desserts with. Example, though it's ChefSteps so it has a login.

Make a basic graham cracker crust and then use it for:

- dark chocolate avocado tart; or

- avocado key lime pie.

By using avocado, you'll get a creamy filling and, unlike with a custard-type tart, you can reduce the sugar in the filling to counteract the sweetness of the crackers without the consistency of the filling being affected. There's also no taste of avocado.

Most delicious option: Key Lime Tart with blueberries. You can make this in a pie pan or springform you don't have a tart pan.

Easy and delicious option: Make a graham cracker pie crust and add your favorite pudding to it. Refrigerate until thickened. enjoy!

There was a restaurant I used to love that did a banana cream pie with a graham cracker crust that had a noticeable amount of salt in it. So it had a salty-sweet crust, banana slices on the bottom, then a not-too-sweet vanilla custard, more banana slices, and whipped cream on top. Smitten Kitchen recently posted a recipe that reminded me of this pie, and I've been thinking of recreating the salted graham cracker crust (I'd probably start with a standard recipe but add maybe 3/4 tsp salt and then taste the crumb mixture to see if it's salty enough) to use in place of the cookie crust in that recipe.

This Smitten Kitchen key lime pie with a graham cracker crust is pretty great and not sweet.

I just had some vanilla ice cream topped with graham cracker crumbs and cinnamon, and it was delicious.

Spending money on food that isn't healthy in order to use up stuff you don't need may not be a rational choice. But, also, cheesecake is what I would do. [edit: I see that's a dupe. Sorry]

Lazy & tasty way to use up a little bit: as topping on store bought key lime yogurt cups.

Or topping for regular yogurt, but graham flavor just goes real nice with key lime, as the many previous suggestions attest.

i crumbled grahams on ice cream last night.

if you were to make homemade chocolate truffles, rolling some of the results in graham cracker crumbs would be delicious.

Maybe too sweet for you, but I love Magic Bars

This No-Bake Energy Bites recipe from King Arthur is a favorite. It’s very adaptable with its mix-ins, so you can take it in sweeter or less-sweet directions, and I always put crushed graham crackers in mine for the crunch.

I’d use it as topping on my otherwise unsweetened oat porridge, probably with a little salt to balance the sweetness. Maybe a diced apple.

Keeping most of it in the freezer and a pint-jar at a time to serve myself from, since I don’t think I’d use it up quickly.

Gently baked with granola and butter + diced apples and/or pears for some basic Crumble is what I would do.

You should be able to use them in an apple brown betty and not have to add a whole lot of sugar. You won't get the same crunchiness as when you add a bunch of sugar but it will sop up the juice that is released while the apples bake.

If you like a poultry stuffing with raisins in it, they might well make a tolerably decent chicken stuffing, along with raisins and walnuts, particularly if you baste the chicken with a sweet barbeque sauce while roasting it.

I mean, yes, key lime pie is what I would do too.

But less sugar: smoothie bowl topping? Ice cream topping for ice cream sundae neighborhood summer block party?

I really like graham cracker crumbs in a berry or banana smoothie.
