Safe, Dog-friendly Stop on I-95?

I'm picking up a new foster dog from JFK airport and need to drive to DC. What's a safe, nice, dog-friendly hotel we could stay at?

For a rescue organization, I'm picking up a dog flying into JFK and need to transport to DC.

I don't think I'll get to leave the airport until maybe 9:30pm. I don't think I can do the entire drive to DC that night BUT I think I could probably do up to a 2 hour drive from JFK before I get too tired. So I was thinking of getting a hotel along the way. The hotels near JFK seem kind of awful? Are there other good options? I'm a woman so a safe area is also important since it'll be nighttime.

PS: The current dog foster overseas says the dog is gentle and should be okay at a hotel. I'll be sure to walk the doggo and give him some time before heading out. :)

Response by poster: PPS: Hit the post button too soon. I meant to clarify that the lodging rec could be by JFK or up to 2 hours away along I-95. Thanks!

I don't know if they are nearby, but they are ubiquitous. La Quinta are dog-friendly and don't charge extra to have them in your room.

Best answer: bring fido is a great resource for all things travel dog related.

Kimpton Hotels are dog-friendly and super nice (they even come with a dog bed, bowl and goodies!). Hotels won't be an issue so much as finding places where you feel safe enough to stop for potty breaks for yourself - generally speaking, you can map out places like Petsmart or Home Goods/Home Depot ahead of time. Dogs are always welcome there and you can just bring him/her with you if you think your new pal can handle the commotion and has shots. Depending on the foster's size, you can bring a towel or bathroom rug with you and just pop it in the bottom of a cart to protect paws and go.

Pro tip: Bring paper towels, extra plastic bags (not just poo bags), and some enzyme cleaner in case the dog gets car sick. I've learned to throw old towels on the seat AND on the floor...gravity. Some bottled water, wipes, and purell might also be helpful, too. One of my dogs likes to, uh, surprise me on vet trips and I've learned the hard way to be prepared!

Do you have a pic of the new arrival??! This sounds very exciting!! Good luck and safe travels! :)

Seconding La Quinta. I drove across the country twice with my canine companion, usually staying in La Quintas. They are reliably decent, and the doggy rooms always seem to be on the first floor, so it's easy to take your dog out.

Glad you found a spot. Just adding for future's sake that Motel 6's are also dog-friendly.
