Movie (80's-90s) about a troubled teen with a grenade launcher

You guys always help with these. I'm trying to find a movie I saw far to young on TV in the mid 90s about a teen who find military grade weapons and kidnaps his crush. The movie begins with him reading a disturbing apocalyptic story about alien invaders to a classroom. The story is also the name of the movie. I want to say it was 'The Destroyers,' but that hasn't helped. Sound familiar to anyone?
Toy Soldiers?

Response by poster: I'm not going to pretend that this post doesn't sound like a serial killer describing a weird serial killer mind fluff, but I swear this movie was shown on cable in the 90s during daylight hours.

I hadn't posted this yet since it really doesn't fit the details, but it keeps scratching at my brain every time I see the question and no one else has answered it, so just in case: Any chance you're thinking of the novella Rage by Richard Bachman (AKA Stephen King)?
It is very much the same flavor as what you're describing, though the details are off (he had a handgun, not a grenade launcher, and the stories he told were historical or about his own life rather than aliens), and to the best of my knowledge it was never made into a movie.
