Recommend a Star Wars graphic novel, please!

I'd like to get my to-be-7-year-old nephew a Star Wars graphic novel for his birthday but have no idea where to begin!

Part of the problem is I'm very unclear on the difference between the comics and the graphic novels. The recommendation lists I'm finding seem to conflate them.

What I would like, if such a thing exists, is something covering the original trilogy. My nephew isn't a fan of scary stuff so I think anything Darth Vader-centric might be a little too intense. Canonicity isn't an issue for me, I don't think? Not sure if it matters.

Please (you're my only) hope me!

For that age I would pick the Jedi Academy series. It's about a kid who goes to Jedi school and is very age appropriate. It has a good amount of text, so it might be too much if he's not a great reader (unless someone reads it to him), but it's loads of fun and definitely the right age.

This says ages 8-12, but reading abilities and levels are so individual that I think those should be considered guidelines. In my opinion (and I am not a trained educator but a life-long learner and a reader since the age of 5 or 6), it actually doesn't hurt to have some words that a young reader doesn't know - they can either make a reasoned guess from context, or they can look it up if they're taught how to use a dictionary (physical or digital) as a resource. Expanding their vocabulary on their own is, again in my opinion, good for their future education.

I got the one TimHare links to for my then 7 year old, and she loved it. It helped her understand the story (and the stresses and surprises) ahead of seeing the movies, so enjoyed them much more.

My comics retailer boyfriend recommends Star Wars Adventures: Smugglers Run by Greg Rucka, Ingo Romling and Alec Worley. Also middle grade (so recommended for 8-12) but I think that should be fine.

Most of the Star Wars Adventures line should be about right, though -- they're all high quality.
